Filipino Children's Books

From the U.S.

There is a scarcity of Filipino children's books  published in the States. As a child growing up in Detroit and L.A. during the 1970's and 1980's,  I remember searching library shelves for books on Filipino heritage and coming home empty handed. It is the 1990's and the situation has only slightly improved. Now, there are a few social studies books that teach about the Philippine government, geography, and culture or books on Philippine mythology. But there is still a great need for books drawn from the contemporary lives of Filipino American children.

From the Philippines

 Over the last few years, I've collected references to children's literature published in the Philippines from my travels and also from the Philippine American Literary House (PAHL). Many of these books are hard to find at Stateside bookstores -- unless you order them from independent bookstores. I have not read all of them, but have found the ones I have read imaginative and fun. PAHL is wonderfully selective about the children's books it recommends.
